We are often asked here at KAT Cleaning how do you remove mould? Mould often is found in bathroom and toilet areas, cupboards and ceilings. Mould is a kind of fungi that can rapidly spread under certain many conditions.
According to mould experts the main things that moulds need to grow include moisture, warmth, spores and nutrients. Moisture is the easiest to control.
To prevent mould is a lot easier than removing it. To reduce moisture in area’s of the workplace and home, it is recommended that air conditioning and/or fans are used to get air circulating. Alternatively dehumidifiers or moisture absorbing buckets can also be put in cupboards to reduce humidity.
If you’re having trouble removing mould from your premises, there are many methods you can use. Whilst bleach takes the colour out of mould and can kill off surface growth and spores, it won’t actually penetrate porous materials.
We highly recommend a vinegar spray solution with an approximately ratio of 90% vinegar (either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar) and 10% water mix. Mix this into a spray bottle, spray your affected area and leave to sit for an hour or two for best results. Wipe the area down clean with a cloth such as microfibre. Clean your cloth in the same solution, rinse in clean water and repeat the process until the mould is completely removed.
Another alternative for cleaning hard surfaces is oil of cloves. Mix half a teaspoon of clove oil to approximately one litre of water. Again mix this into a spray bottle, spray the solution onto the affected area and leave to sit for 30 minutes to an hour. Wipe with a clean cloth of your choice and spray again, this time leaving it untouched for at least 24hours to allow mould spores to completely be neutralised.
As with any cleaning technique, it’s always best to test a small patch first to avoid damaging the surface and always use appropriate protective gear when necessary.
